WHY BAN HANDGUNS?

With all of the attention that is being paid to the massacre in Colorado, Canadians are crying out for a ban on handguns.
Such a ban is not needed in this country. Handguns are strictly regulated from coast to coast (firearms are controlled by a federal law). And to buy a gun legally is one of the most onerous an on-going procedures you can imagine. If you are not legally entitled to use one such as police officers, that pretty well leaves you as a member of a gun club. A permit is required in order to buy the gun which must be maintained in your home in a locked case. You are under rigorous controls, too, even when carrying it to a club meeting.
No. What we require is tougher border controls because the illegal weapons come here from the U.S. But how to make border inspections even more exacting than they now are is a tough one? That is the question.
