WHAT'S IN SIGHT FOR AFGHANISTAN?

Next year our troops will leave Afghanistan. That's what Prime Minister Harper solemnly pledged to Canadians. Now, well we might just leave about 1,000 troops there as trainers. But let's just cut to the chase for a moment: Is there even the slightest chance that the Taliban insurgents will cease their killing there? I don't think so. Will the Canadian, U.S., Britain and the soldiers from other countries really be able to bring peace to that country? Again, I don't think so. And if the Taliban can't be drastically and permanently defeated, what are we doing there? Why do we continue spilling the blood of our young men and women? The aim of bringing a better life to those unfortunate people where girls can't attend school for risk of having acid thrown in their faces is a noble one. The only long-range hope is for the Afghanistan government to cut through its corruption and be able to govern its own people and provide freedom. How many dangerous years will that require? The Afghan government seems to fear the powerful war lords, many with their own armies. These were the same men who at the request of the U.S. helped drive the Taliban from their country.
Perhaps the most significant reason for the Taliban's tenacity is a cardinal rule of Islam that can require Muslims to come to the aid of Muslims whose homeland is being invaded by non-Muslim nations.
It's a hopeless situation in my opinion. What do YOU think about this problem? Please tell me and others by sending a comment which I'll publish here. Just click on Comments below.--Irvine Brace.
