PAPER WILL SOON BE REPLACED

CHANGES IN PUBLISHING

As a person who has spent his working life in publishing--most of it with Maclean Hunter Publishing in Toronto--the increasing encroachment of hand-held "devices" on the printed word causes me to shake my head in disbelieve.  It is not just someone's fanciful idea that people won't some day be reading paper newspapers and books, it is already happening. It is now possible to read your daily newspaper on an electronic 'reader', or for that matter a book.
.. Hundreds can be stored in a tablet-sized device that you can carry in your pocket or purse. Some  iphones can also be used as ereaders. Public libraries offer patrons ebooks. You don't have to be concerned with returning them by the due date, either. They simply become inactive when it arrives.
It takes some practice to become familiar and comfortable reading from these screens, but it can be done. No more will you have to worry about non-delivery of your morning newspaper (as has been a problem here in London with the London Free Press this past winter). It is just a matter of time when it will be commonplace to see people reading the paper or a book in an ebook while riding to work on a public transport vehicle.

Rogers Communications has sold 15 of its trade publications to Glacier Media
a publishing firm in B.C. These "books" as they were called during my time in the business were part of the original deal when Rogers bought Maclean Hunter several years ago. If you'd like to read about this news, click on:
